Discount formulas

Sale price = Price × (1 − discount) Stacked discounts: Final = Price × (1 − d₁) × (1 − d₂)

Discount example

A $240 jacket at 35% off, plus an extra 10% coupon at checkout:

  • After 35% off: $156.00
  • After the extra 10%: $140.40
  • You save: $99.60
  • True total discount: 41.5% (not 45%)

Shop sales smarter

  1. Check price history: some retailers raise list prices before a sale.
  2. Compare the final price, not the percentage: a smaller discount at another store can be cheaper.
  3. Mind the card balance: a sale is no bargain if it sits on a card at 22% APR — see the credit card payoff calculator.
  4. Stick to a plan: set a spending limit with the budget calculator.

Sellers can check the impact on profit with the profit margin calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a discount?

Sale price = Price × (1 − discount). 35% off $240 is $240 × 0.65 = $156.

Is 35% off plus 10% off the same as 45% off?

No. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price, so the total is 1 − (0.65 × 0.90) = 41.5%.

How do I find the percent off?

Percent off = (Original − Sale) ÷ Original × 100. A $240 item on sale for $180 is 25% off.
